In response to recent public concerns and misconceptions, the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana (CAG) through this opinion piece aims to provide clarification regarding the announcement made by the National Biosafety Authority of Ghana (NBA). The NBA has approved the use of 14 genetically modified organisms (GM products) for food, feed, and processing in Ghana. It is essential to understand that these approved GMOs are not seeds meant for agricultural production but rather raw materials intended for food, feed, and processing purposes within Ghana.
Genetically modified organisms refer to organisms whose genetic material has been modified using advanced biotechnology techniques. These modifications are undertaken to enhance certain desirable traits, such as improved nutritional content, increased resistance to pests and diseases, or enhanced processing characteristics. GMOs have been extensively studied and regulated to ensure their safety for human and animal health, and the environment.
The approval of 14 GM products by the NBA does not imply the introduction of genetically modified seeds for cultivation in Ghana. Instead, these approved GMO products will serve as raw materials in the food, feed, and processing industries. They will contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable products that meet the evolving demands of consumers and foster economic growth.
It is crucial to emphasise that rigorous scientific assessments and comprehensive safety evaluations have been conducted on these GM products by the NBA before their approval. These assessments take into account potential risks and benefits, as well as compliance with national and international biosafety standards. The NBA remains committed to ensuring the safety of GM products and their adherence to regulatory guidelines.
As a key stakeholder, CAG urges the public to base their understanding and opinions on accurate information from reliable sources. Genetically modified products have been extensively studied and consumed worldwide for several decades, with no substantiated evidence of harm to human health. The approved GM products in Ghana have undergone initial assessments to ensure their safety and suitability for use in food, feed, and processing.
We encourage continued dialogue and engagement among stakeholders, including government authorities, scientists, farmers, industry representatives, and consumers. This inclusive approach promotes transparency, increased awareness, and informed decision-making regarding genetically modified products.
Ghana's approval of these GM products for food, feed, and processing highlights the country's commitment to harnessing the benefits of modern biotechnology while prioritising safety and sustainability. By embracing evidence-based practices and regulatory frameworks, Ghana aims to foster innovation, enhance food security, and contribute to the nation's economic development.
